Team Captain Greg Davis, Nickel City Splash

Greg Davis has been an active participant in Tour de Cure for almost a decade. His team is called "Nickel City Splash". We asked him why he is committed to raise money for diabetes through riding. This is his story:

Not long after my family and I moved to Buffalo, my Dad was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. Although, he managed his blood sugar with medication, my Dad was not one to sacrifice in the form of exercise. "So many other fun things to do in life, but that's not one of them," he would remark. Understanding my Dad was like most people, my challenge is to set an example for those around me to make fitness a priority. For that reason, I make it a mission to take care of the equipment by participating in aerobic exercise in many ways. In addition to cycling, I like to swim, ski, lift weights and play golf. Okay, maybe golf isn't aerobic, but it is, nonetheless, a challenge.

One of the ways I've set the example of exercise is to be a Team Captain in the Tour de Cure. For the last eight years, I have led a team of family and friends in the various distances of the Tour. In that span of time, our team has raised almost $70,000 which directly improves the lives of patients and their families in Western NY. At the end of the day, I enjoy being apart of the ADA and the Tour because it's a good time and it's the right thing to do. At the same time, I'm giving back to the many, like my Dad, who suffered with diabetes.
